Test Body for Fire Protection, Branch Lathen

The fire resistance tests of vertical building elements are conducted at location Lathen in a modern equipped test institute. 2010 the first vertical test furnace with the maximum test specimen dimensions of 4,00 m x 4,00 m was brought into service as a branch of the accredited and notified test body for fire protection in Dortmund. Therefore a modern test and assembly hall with office section was built. In the recent years various expansions were made, so that the test institute now has a hall area of approx. 2.500 m².

The different building parts are offering optimal space for the assembly of the test specimen. For the assembly sufficient equipment as crane system, lifting platforms, glass suction unit etc. are at disposal.

A flue gas cleaning system specifically built for the fire tests ensures a secure, environment-conscious and climate-friendly disposal of the combustion gases. The environmental management system of DMT GmbH & Co. KG is certified according to EN ISO 14001:2015.

At the location in Lathen fire tests for fire resistance, tests of durability (resistance to repeated opening and closing, durability of self-closing), smoke protection behaviour as also test of airborne sound insulation (sound insulation) on the basis of different standards are performed.

Those test certificates serve among others as basis for the purpose of the application of a general technical approval (allgemeine bauaufsichtliche Zulassung (abZ) at the German Institute for Structural Engineering (Deutsches Institut für Bautechnik), Berlin and at the VKF in Switzerland as also within the European procedure according to the Construction Products Regulation according to product standard EN 16034 as evidence for the preparation of classification reports according to EN 13501-2 as also EXAP reports.

Furthermore this tests serve for the acquirement of Usability Certificates (Verwendbarkeitsnachweise) all over Europe.

As approved test institute according to EN ISO / IEC 17025 as also as listed test body by the German Institute for Structural Engineering (Deutsches Institut für Bautechnik), Berlin and the VKF, Switzerland we support you in achieving all necessary evidence.

Fire resistance

Vertical test furnace 4 m x 4 m

Technical data:

  •  Open clearance of test chamber (W x H) = 4000 mm x 4000 mm
  •  Lateral firing of the furnace with in total 6 gas burners parallel towards the furnace opening
  •  Distance of the burner axis to the furnace opening approx. 0,75 m resp. 1,00 m when using an adapter frame
  •  In total 12 furnace thermocouples measure the furnace temperature positioned according to EN 1363-1
  •  The microprocessor-controlled burners are controlled in accordance with EN 1363-1
  •  Into the furnace back side 2 observation windows are embedded

Vertical test furnace 6,4 m x 5,3 m

The new test furnace went into operation in mid-2017, is designed for vertical test specimens and provides the following technical data:

  • Open clearance of test chamber (W x H) = 6.400 mm x 5.300 mm
  • Lateral firing of the furnace with in total 16 gas burners parallel towards the furnace opening
  • Distance of the burner axis to the furnace opening approx. 1,25 m
  • burner power each approx. 400 kW, which achieves a total power of approx. 6.400 kW
  • In total 24 furnace thermocouples measure the furnace temperature positioned according to EN 1363-1
  • The microprocessor-controlled burners are controlled in accordance with EN 1363-1
  • Into the furnace back side in total 4 observation windows and an access door are embedded
  • 2 special cameras can be placed into the observation windows to record the test specimen during the fire test from the side of the furnace

Vertical test furnace 3 m x 3 m

The newest fire test furnace went into operation at the beginning of 2018. This furnace enables f.e. cost-efficient tests during development (orienting fire tests). It is designed for vertical test specimens and provides the following technical data:  

  • Open clearance of test chamber (W x H) = 3000 mm x 3000 mm
  • Lateral firing of the furnace with in total 6 gas burners parallel towards the furnace opening
  • Distance of the burner axis to the furnace opening approx. 0,85 m
  • In total 9 furnace thermocouples measure the furnace temperature positioned according to EN 1363-1
  • The microprocessor-controlled burners are controlled in accordance with EN 1363-1

 

Fire tests according to EN 1634-1, Fire resistance and smoke control tests for door and shutter assemblies, openable windows and elements of building hardware – Part 1: Fire resistance test for door and shutter assemblies and openable windows

This part of EN 1634 defines a test procedure for the determination of fire resistance duration of doors, shutters, assemblies and windows that are designed for the installation into openings of vertical separating building components.

At this f.e. hinged and pivoted doors, sliding gates, roller shutters, sectional doors and others for example of fire resistance class T30 resp. EI230 are tested for fire resistance. But also radiation blocking EW-closures or fire-resistant closures (f.e. textile curtains), which solely ensure the integrity (E30 to E180), are possible up to maximum dimensions of 6,4 m x 5,3 m.

 

 

Fire tests according to EN 1364-1, Fire resistance tests for non-loadbearing elements –Part 1: Walls

This part of EN 1364 states a procedure for determination of fire resistance of non-loadbearing walls.

The purpose of the tests is the determination of the fire resistance of non-loadbearing building components – as f.e. inner walls and glazing walls. Also partitions and glazing walls can be tested as construction with corners in a special test frame.

This European standard defines a procedure for determining the fire resistance of curtain walling systems in full and part configuration.

Fire tests according to EN 1366-7, Fire resistance tests for service installations - Part 7: Conveyor systems and their closures

The purpose of the tests is the determination of the fire resistance for service installations - conveyor systems and their closures.

Conveyor systems and their closures are tested according to the aforementioned European harmonized test standard and evaluated according to EAD 350022-01-1107 – Kit for closure system of conveyor systems.

Such European Technical Assessments are issued for building products for which (yet) no harmonized standards according to the Construction Products Regulation exist or which deviate significantly from these standards.

Test facilities

Within the smoke leakage test rig the maximum dimensions of 5,00 m x 5,00 m or 3,40 m x 3,40 m can be tested regarding smoke protection. All further dimensions can also be realised after consultation. The test facility was developed 2011 according to latest state of the art. The control of the test rig is done fully automatic.

In total 14 movable test frames are available, which can be individually adjusted to client’s requests.

Tests according to EN 1634-3, tests of smoke concentration for smoke protection closures (doors, shutters, windows) for determination of the smoke leakage rate

Fire resistance tests for door and shutter assemblies – Part 3: Smoke control doors and shutters

This part of EN 1634 states a test procedure for determination of the smoke leakage rate of cold (Sa) and warm (S200) smoke from one side of an assembly to the other under defined test conditions. The test can be applied on closures of various constructions, which are designated for interference of smoke movement in case of fire. This test procedure can also be used for lift landing doors and closures of path-bound conveyor systems.

This standard describes the test procedure, which is to apply for the proof of suitability for smoke protection doors according to DIN 18095 part 1 for the durability and for the tightness at ambient temperature and increased temperature.  

The purpose of the test for smoke protection behaviour of smoke protection closures or fire protection closures is the determination of leakage rates.

In a separate test hall under video surveillance with a size of 200 m² tests of resistance against repeated opening and closing (durability of self-closing) can be performed on test specimens with the maximum dimensions of 5,00 m x 5,00 m.

A test contingence for 10 test specimens is available.

Furthermore test rigs for industrial doors, shutters and conveyor systems and its closures (conveyor system closures) up to the maximum dimensions of (W x H) 25,00 m x 4,50 m resp. 20,00 m x 6,00 m are available.

The purpose of the above mentioned normative tests is the verification of the durability of self-closing (Resistance to repeated opening and closing). The test specimens are exposed to a given number of opening and closing cycles. The number of cycles depends on the pursued class resp. the national requirements.

By the cooperation within TÜV Nord Group we can provide all services and tests within the scope of the product standard EN 16034 as also EN 13241, which at least result in the CE-marking by the manufacturer.

This of course includes also the certification of building products as accredited certification body and notified product certification body.

The PfB Prüfzentrum für Bauelemente (test center for building elements) in Stephanskirchen near Rosenheim and the DMT Prüfstelle für Brandschutz (test body for fire protection) will work together closer in the future.

The PfB is approved for a variety of tests for building elements as accredited and notified test and certification body. All tests (except fire tests) for doors, windows, gates, facades, shutters as also their fittings can be conducted at PfB. Furthermore, PfB offers a wide range of special tests.

Also it is possible to carry out a certification by the in-house certification body PfBcert. Among others also building elements with characteristics regarding fire and smoke protection are certified.

Especially certification according to EN 14351-1 (external pedestrian doorsets) as prospective also EN 14351-2 (internal pedestrian doorsets) can be realized by this cooperation. 

Partner of TÜV Nord Systems regarding sound insulation tests

Sound insulation test rig

At the site in Lathen a test rig for airborne sound insulation according to DIN EN ISO 10140, DIN EN 1793-2 is available. By a cooperation within TÜV Nord Group building products as façade elements, acoustic barrier walls, windows, doors and shutters can be tested for airborne sound insulation in Lathen. A maximum sound reduction index of R‘max,w = 72 dB can be reached.

The professional support is done by experienced TÜV NORD experts in a test laboratory accredited by DAkkS according to DIN EN ISO/IEC 17025. Further expert consultation by the sound insulation experts of TÜV NORD (notified body according to § 29b BImSchG) can be occupied any time.

The New Furnace
